WALMER HOUSE RENOVATION
We were approached to deliver a concept design for the re-modelling of a large detached house in Walmer, Kent. The aim was to unlock the circulation to avoid the existing small dark corridors and add an extension to the rear to create a generous kitchen/dining room with expansive views to the garden beyond.
This project delivers a comprehensive transformation of a family home in Walmer, Kent, combining a full internal renovation with carefully considered extensions that enhance both functionality and connection to the surrounding landscape. Our involvement included concept design, planning application, and coordination of the technical design through construction, ensuring clarity and consistency from early vision to final delivery.
Central to the design was the complete remodelling of the ground-floor circulation. Previously fragmented spaces were reorganised to create a seamless, free-flowing layout that supports contemporary living. The revised plan brings clarity to movement, improves interaction between rooms, and allows natural light to reach deeper into the home. A new open-plan kitchen and dining space now forms the heart of the house. This generous area is anchored by a feature corner glazing element positioned to frame long views across the property’s expansive landscaped garden. The glazing not only draws the outside in but creates a striking architectural moment that enhances both daily living and seasonal changes throughout the year.
To accommodate the new open-plan living space, we designed a single-storey timber-clad rear extension. The natural warmth and texture of the cladding offers a subtle contrast to the existing house, softening the transition into the garden and giving the extension a calm, contemporary identity.
At the front of the property, a modest but impactful extension reshapes the arrival experience. The project includes the extension of the entrance hallway and garage, providing improved storage, better accessibility, and a more balanced architectural composition. The enlarged hallway creates a brighter, more welcoming threshold that sets the tone for the reconfigured interior beyond.
Alongside the architectural interventions, the project undertook a full house renovation, including interior finishes, improved thermal performance with EWI (external wall insulation), reconfigured services, and modernised fixtures throughout. The coordinated approach ensured that every element — from spatial planning to material selection — worked together to create a cohesive and elevated home environment.
The completed design offers a renewed sense of clarity and openness, supporting modern family life while embracing the generous garden setting. Through thoughtful planning, sensitive extensions and a consistent design language, the house has been transformed into a calm, contemporary home that responds beautifully to its surroundings.
