HAMPSHIRE GEORGIAN COTTAGE
This project presents the design for a new-build country residence in rural Hampshire, conceived as a contemporary interpretation of the Georgian vernacular. The house draws inspiration from the proportion, symmetry and restraint characteristic of traditional Georgian architecture, while incorporating modern construction methods and a carefully considered landscape setting.
The composition is organised around a clear and balanced façade, with evenly spaced sash windows, a central entrance and a simple pitched slate roof framed by brick chimneys. The use of natural flint walling with brick detailing reflects the historic material palette of Hampshire and neighbouring counties, allowing the house to sit comfortably within its rural context. A limestone portico frames the front door and is softened by climbing wisteria, creating a welcoming threshold and reinforcing the relationship between architecture and garden.
Internally, the layout follows a traditional Georgian planning logic, with a central entrance hall providing a clear axis through the building and connecting the principal ground floor spaces. Generous ceiling heights, large sash windows and carefully framed views create light-filled interiors that engage with the surrounding landscape. The plan is arranged to provide both formal entertaining spaces and more informal family areas, ensuring the house functions as a contemporary family home.
The landscape design is integral to the architectural concept. A curved gravel approach leads visitors through structured planting beds of lavender, perennial borders and clipped topiary, reinforcing the sense of arrival and framing views of the house. The garden design balances formality close to the building with softer, naturalistic planting further into the grounds.
Although inspired by historic precedent, the project is firmly contemporary in its performance and construction. Modern insulation standards, high-performance glazing and energy-efficient systems ensure the house meets current environmental expectations while maintaining the character and craftsmanship associated with traditional country houses.
The result is a refined and timeless rural home: a carefully proportioned Georgian-inspired residence that responds to its Hampshire setting while providing a comfortable and sustainable modern dwelling.
