This project was to convert a derelict metal  North Devon, transforming it into two distinct high-spec family homes. Planning had been granted for the design and we were approached to undertake the technical design and layout/planning amendments.

 

The design of the barns was simple volumetrically, maintaining largely the principle form of the original barn building. Striking cut-outs were incorporated into the southern elevation to frame amazing views across the valley and beyond. As a result, entry into the barns is from the rear of the site, and all main living, kitchen and dining areas are positioned to make the most out of the views.

The barns were constructed from SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels), providing a high performance and allowing the construction programme to be dramatically reduced. We undertook the design using 3D software, sharing the model with the SIPs manufacturer to ensure maximum coordination and accuracy on site. This also allowed internal walkthroughs to take place with the client when making modifications to the internal layouts.
